Halloween adds a spark of life to a time of year that’s traditionally dead: flickering jack-o’-lanterns lighting up the dark, dressing up in costumes, running around after dark for candy.
At the same time, while we’re celebrating and making memories, the holiday comes with its own set of safety concerns.
When kids are out trick-or-treating, they’re more at risk to be hit by a car. Twice as likely, in fact, to be hit by a car on Halloween night than any other time of the year, according to Safe Kids USA. And then there’s the candles we like to burn. Holiday decorations cause some 860 structure fires each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association (and that excludes Christmas trees), with nearly two-in-five of these fires started by candles.
Whether you’re a parent with kids or you’re passing out treats, keep the bad tricks out of the season with these tips to keep everyone’s Halloween safe and happy.
